Social Media Jargon Buster

Ping

Packet internet gopher. Lets content aggregators know when a blog has been updated.

Platform

The framework or system within which tools work. Can be as broad as mobile telephony, or as narrow as a piece of software that has various modules, like blogs, forums or wikis, bolted on.

Peer to Peer (or P2P)

The direct interaction between two people within a network, eg 'P2P content aggregation' = online equivalent of swapping football stickers in the playground.

The web address (URL) of a specific item of content, for example a blog post, rather than a web page with lots of different items.

Phish (v.)

We know not why techies like to replace 'f's with 'ph's, but this term applies to unscrupulous faceless fraudsters who try to trick the gullible (and feckless) into parting with their personal information via spurious emails.

Plug-ins

Small software modules that add multimedia functions to an application. Web browsers use plug-ins such as Flash to expand the type of formats they can see such as video, music or animation.

Podcast

An audio file made available online. Can be downloaded automatically through a subscription to a website so you can view or listen offline.

Proprietary Software

Unlike open-source software, proprietary software is owned by someone who doesn't want the source code freely available. Some proprietary software may be free, and some open-source software may be sold. The issue is the terms under which the underlying code is available.

Post

A dated entry, comment or article submitted by a blogger / user.

Profiles

Personal info you give about yourself when you sign up for a social networking site. Only 20% of people will tend to embellish their profile with a pic. Why so shy? You're cracking looking*!
