Otherwise known as 'organic search', a natural search reveals results that appear on the main part of the search engine results page. You can't pay to influence your ranking in a natural search, but you can do any kind of clever things to your website to bump it up the list.
Time for a sum: NPI = No. of people who would recommend your product, service or topic - no. of people who wouldn't. The results are collated by monitoring software, which assigns a weighting to the share of voice and relevancy of each recommender / non-recommender, then publishes a score, or NPS (Net Promoters Score).
